Office Suites:
If you are using an office suite that is working for you, enjoy! If you are having problems sharing word processor, spreadsheet and other files, a great choice is OPENOFFICE. It is extremely MS Office compatible, runs on all Windows versions, Macs and Linux computers and is FREE!

SpyWare:
Many software developers attach software to their products that has the ability to gather and forward information about you and your computing habits. This software can report your credit card info, passwords and personal information to organizations that can be dangerous to you under Identity Theft. Often this gathered information is used to determine your computing habits so as to design those annoying screen pop ups (feel better yet). Others gather this information to sell. My experience has been that after using Internet Explorer there seems to be more of this stuff to eliminate. All of this can cause your computer to slow down, as it sends YOUR information to the world.
Some free products that help eliminate this problem are
ADWARE, SPYBOT, AOL users have Spyware and McAfee, and
Norton is joining the arena with commercial products. Some of these FREE products also have commercial products which offer full time protection and other features, that is your choice. Free or commercial, give one or more a chance, update often, run often!
I would be careful about sites that are willing to SCAN your computer on line.
Remember that SPYWARE is NOT ANTI-VIRUS, and at this point in time both are required. |
Support Software:
Support software falls into two categories and sometimes both!
Adobe provides a free product called ACROBAT READER. It is used to read files with the extension .PDF. PDF files are everywhere on the web, contain valuable information, forms and documents. This product is available as a download and can be ordered on CD through Adobe. Acrobat will install it self as a PLUG-IN to your web browser and as a standalone product. You cannot directly edit the files read into Acrobat, as it is only a viewer, although these can be printed.
Apple computer provides a movie player called QUICKTIME PLAYER and can be downloaded at www.apple.com.
Real is a streaming video player competing with Windows media player and Apple, all have a their own features and file format and are also compatible with the others. The FREE Real Player can be downloaded at www.real.com

Web Browsers:
These web pages have been created using a FREE set of web browsers called Mozilla and FireFox and have had excellent results. These browsers run on Windows, Mac and Linux. Due to reasons explained under Spyware, I have found these browsers a better choice than Internet Explorer.
